Registered nurses in aged care homes are responsible for providing high quality care to residents on a physical, emotional and holistic level. To enter into the industry, the first clinical step is to qualify as an assistant in nursing/personal care worker, and through upskilling you can step into the role of a registered nurse. Typical duties include: 

  • Measuring vital signs 
  • Medication management 
  • Wound management 
  • Emotional and educational support 
  • Providing daily living assistance 

The pay rate you receive will depend on your experience, shift pattern and the provider you work for. Theaverage casual pay rates sit between $50 - $120 per hour and the average salary for a permanent role is between $85,000 - $120,000 per year.

Incentives, allowances and bonuses are applicable for certain jobs. Reforms in aged care have also led to pay rises for aged care workers in recent years, with more developments to come.

Generally speaking, you need one year of paid Australian aged care experience to work as a casual registered nurse with Sanctuary. For permanent roles, aged care homes hire registered nurses from graduate to very experienced. There may still be opportunities available if you have less than this, so get in touch with our team for more information.

To work in any clinical setting as a registered nurse, you will need: 

  • A Bachelor of Nursing (three-year degree) 
  • Once qualified, you need an AHPRA registration to practice in Australia
